1. Catherine's story is similar to the topic of alleviating poverty because some people in the world do not take action in helping others to escape poverty, as they think there are already enough fund and aid to do so.
2. Yes. When 2 countries end up in a war due to a conflict, other countries are not likely to help and stop them, as they are afraid that their countries might get tangled into the country. The problem is that if all the countries think this way, there is no other party which could alleviate the situation. Also, leaders do not tend to get involved in these conflicts because they are afraid of corruption.
3. Yes. For the leaders, the responsibility for engaging a country into a conflict is risky, thus many do not take risks.
4. I think that the failure of a government to act in response to the needs of their own people is not considered as a bystander effect, as it is a right for humans to feel safe in their own country. However, in some cases there are exceptions. Like the crisis in Haiti, the government could not act for the needs of their people, but depended on the outside aid. - Not EXACTLY a bystander effect because they didn't have the power to do so at the time.
5. There was this one situation where I failed to act due to this bystander effect. There was this boy who always used to be alone when I was young and I felt sorry for him, but I never approached to him because of this phenomenon. I thought that someone else would eventually come along and play with him, but others also seemed to be caught up with the same thought. To think it about now, I feel that I was mistaken and that I should have took action back then.
